Aqaba, the Southernmost City in Jordan, lies at the tip of the Red Sea on the Gulf of Aqaba, It is strategically located at the crossroads of the three continents of Asia, Europe and Africa, and borders Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel.

330km South of Capital City of Amman, Aqaba lies and covers an area of 375 Square Kilometers.

Aqaba can be reached by Land, Air or sea, You can get there by either taking a cruise ship through the warm waters of the Red Sea from Egypt; by flying in from various locations; or if you prefer exploring by car, you can drive there from within Jordan or from Saudi Arabia, Israel or Iraq.

A network of reliable modern highways connects Aqaba to the Capital Amman, neighboring areas, and bordering countries, allowing for safe and efficient passenger transportation.

From Aqaba's town center, the borders of Israel and Saudi Arabia are no more than a half hour drive in opposite directions.

Aqaba FortressIf driving from Amman, passengers can reach Aqaba either via the scenic Dead Sea road, which is paved along the lowest point on earth; or alternatively via the Desert Highway road, which cuts through the splendid deserts of Disi and Wadi Rum - Where Lawrence of Arabia once rode his desert caravans. Both routes - duration is approximately a 3-4 hour drive from Amman to Aqaba.

There are frequent regular tourist and non-tourist buses that can take you from Amman directly to Aqaba (the central bus station) and back, with no stops on the way.

If you are interested in exploring the area further, there are regular bus routes from Amman to several other destinations, These tourist buses are punctual, spacious and installed with amenities such as air conditioning and bathrooms, Snacks are served for a fee and a hostess is available onboard, Buses can also be rented by tour operators for trips to various destinations inside Jordan.

King Hussein International Airport lies to the north of the city, and is a 20-minutes drive away from the center. Royal Jordanian offers regular flights from Amman to Aqaba and the flying time is about 45 minutes, The airport is equipped to handle most commercial and chartered aircrafts from various destinations in the world.

Time and Measures

Time in Jordan is two Hours (GMT +2) ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in Winter From October to March & Three Hours (GMT +3) ahead in Summer From April to September.

Jordan operates almost entirely on the Metric System, where the Kilogram, the Meter & the Liter are the basic units.

As for Land, the measurement is the Dunum, where One Dunum is Equal to (1,000) Square Meters (10,760 Square Feet).

Currency & Credit Cards

The currency of Jordan is Jordanian Dinar (JD) or (JOD).

  • One JOD is 1000 Fils.
  • Coins & Bank Notes denominations are both used.
  • The Coin Denominations are: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 & 500 Fils.
  • The Bank Note Denominations are: 1, 5, 10, 20 & JOD 50.
  • The daily exchange rate is published in the local newspapers (at current Exchange Rate 1 JD approximately equals 1.4 US Dollars).
  • Money can be exchanged not only at banks, but also at hotels and currency exchange offices.
  • Credit Cards are Accepted at most Hotels, Car Rentals, Shops & Restaurants, Major Cards Accepted Are: Master Card, Visa & American Express. Please note that many Smaller Shops still prefer Cash Payments in the Jordanian Currency, and it's essential for shopping in the local Market Despite the fact the some shops Accepts US Dollars & Euros.
  • Travelers Checks are not Accepted everywhere except in Banks and the Currency Exchange.

Business Hours

  • Friday is the Weekly Holiday; Banks, Government Offices & most businesses are closed on Saturdays as well. During the month of Ramadan, working hours are usually reduced.
  • ASEZA's Offices are Open From 08:00 AM To 04:00 PM Daily except Fridays, Saturdays, National Holidays, and Religious Holidays.
  • Government Offices are Open From 07:00 AM To 03:00 PM Daily except Fridays, Saturdays, National Holidays, and Religious Holidays.
  • Banks Open to the public From 08:30 AM to 03:30 PM From Sunday Till Thursday.
  • Most of the Shops Opens their doors all week around between 09:00 and 10:00 AM & closes around 11:00 PM.

Internet services

Internet service is available in internet cafes and some big hotels through out the city.

Access to the internet is available for relatively cheap price compared to the big hotels.
